College Profile

buildingThe rich heritage of excellence in post-secondary education was brought to the United States by the Religious Sisters of Mercy, and extended to Toledo, Ohio in 1917 with the founding of the Mercy School of Nursing. The nursing program provided a vehicle through which the educational mission of the Sisters of Mercy was promoted. Mercy College of Northwest Ohio was incorporated in 1992 and admitted its first class of nursing students in January of 1993 on the Toledo campus. Since then, the college has obtained authorization from The Higher Learning Commission of NCA for additional associate’s and bachelor’s degrees and in the 1990s additional health care degree programs were added to meet the needs of the northwest Ohio region. The Toledo campus currently offers Associate of Science degrees in General Studies, Health Information Technology, Nursing, Radiologic Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.

In the fall of 2002, the college received approval from the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Board of Nursing and the Higher Learning Commission to offer the college’s Associate of Science in Nursing Program on a new campus in Youngstown, Ohio. The Youngstown Site is located in the St. Elizabeth Hospital facilities and has graduated five classes.

Bachelor’s degree completion programs in nursing and health care administration were first offered in 2007 and the number of online courses offered continues to rapidly grow.  The college also has a robust Continuing Professional Education department that not only provides continuing professional education opportunities to area healthcare professionals, but also provides entry level training programs to area residents, especially those referred through the local workforce development initiatives.

The fifteen day count for the Fall 2008 semester at Mercy College was 833 students at the main campus in Toledo, Ohio with another 88 students at the Youngstown Site for a total of 921 students.   The average student age is 26, and the student population is 90% female.  Mercy College’s tuition is $6672 ($298 per credit hour for full-time students and $308 per credit hour for part-time students) and 82% students receive financial assistance.

Today, Mercy College continues the mission of health care education, under the sponsorship of the Sisters of Mercy and Sisters of Charity of Montréal (Grey Nuns) on the Toledo campus and the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of Humility of Mary on the Youngstown campus.
