How to Apply for Financial Aid
To be considered for all available types of financial aid, students must apply for financial aid as early as possible. Students must reapply each year. To be considered for all types of financial aid, interested students must have a complete financial aid file and have applied for acceptance to the college/program.
Required documents usually include, but are not limited to:
• A completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
• Signed copies of the student’s and parents’ (if applicable) most recent IRS 1040 form and all schedules
• A separate application for each scholarship or benefit for which the student is applying
• Loan applications and a loan request form, if a student loan is desired. All necessary forms must be submitted to the college’s Financial Aid Office by the required deadlines.
Financial Aid Checklist
There are several steps you need to take to set up your financial aid. As a student you are responsible for making sure that you meet financial aid deadlines and turn in all required paperwork. Following this checklist will help you ensure that everything is done in a timely manner.
1. Apply for a PIN (personal identification number) at www.pin.ed.gov. If you are a dependent student your parents will need to apply for their own PIN as well.
2. File your FAFSA (Free application for federal student aid) at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Do this as soon after January 1st as possible. To ensure that you receive all funds available to you we recommend completing this by the priority deadline of March 1st. Be sure to include the Mercy College school code 030970.
3. Review your SAR (Student Aid Report) when you receive it and make any changes ASAP.
4. After you are accepted to Mercy College, you will receive your Financial Aid Award Notification. Review and update with any outside resources you are receiving not listed on your award notification.
5. Submit verification documents if they are requested from the Financial Aid Office. Not all students will have to complete this step.
6. If you are a first time borrower complete your Entrance counseling and MPN (Master Promissory Note). It is recommended that these are both completed electronically.
7. Submit your completed Loan Request Form once you receive your award letter. Be sure to get this to the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible so that your aid can be processed.
8. Respond to any additional requests for information from the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.
The Financial Aid Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., or by appointment. Please call 419-251-1219 for additional information.
